Both Barrels Jun 2016

Both Barrels from Fish & Game NZ - March 2015

Both Barrels - June 2016.

With the game bird hunting season now half way through, hunters in many regions are reporting duck numbers are up after a good breeding season.

The better numbers have resulted in a subsequent improvement in the number of duck dinners that hunters have been able to serve to their families and friends.

For many North Island licence holders, the season for mallard, grey and shoveller ducks closed in June in Auckland/Waikato, Eastern and Hawkes Bay regions.

Taranaki and Wellington close on July 3, leaving Northland the only North Island region open to duck hunters for the rest of the month.

In contrast, all South Island regions are open through to the end of July.

However, all is not lost! The game bird season continues through to late August, with upland game the quarry.

The North Island has some very good pheasant and quail hunting which licence holders can now turn their attention to.

In some North Island regions, you are still able to hunt paradise shelduck in July. This does not apply everywhere, so double check to see if this under-valued hunting opportunity is still available in your area.

You could also continue travelling south to enjoy the hunting in the mainland. Worth noting is that the Central South Island region – CSI – is the quickest place for hunters to taste success and get some plump mallards for the dinner table.

And of course places like Otago and Marlborough are renowned for their quail hunting in fabulous surroundings.

These opportunities highlight the value offered by Fish & Game’s nationwide licences, so get out, go somewhere new and try something different – you still have two months to get maximum value from your licence!

P.S. This month’s cover picture - Areas of rough cover in gullies and coastal country can hold reasonable numbers of pheasant like this part of the Taranaki.

P.P.S - If you think you've got an image worthy of featuring on our 'cover', email it to Don Rood for consideration.
